She's a talented musician. She wrote most of her songs including lyrics. She's only 27 years old when she died...

Her song 'Rehab', which won three Granny Awards in 2008 including Record of the year and Song of the Year, showed that she had depression and drinking problem, but she refused all sorts of help. She thought she would recover naturally.

Maybe if she sang, 'Yes Yes Yes' in 'Rehab' and got some helps, she might still be alive.

Played 'Angry Birds' for the first time on Google Chrome. It's an interesting game, yet with the hateful background (the birds want revenge for their eggs which are eaten by those pigs), it becomes such a violence game to me that I can't help thinking of Kamikaze 神風特攻隊 in WWII while playing it......

Maybe I am too imaginative and sensitive, yet I still wonder if this game will subtly have bad influences to children......

聽你聽我 - 張惠妹

Once a friend asked me what kinds of music I listened most of the time, I answered 'sad songs'.

Sad songs remind me of Hope and Joy. Sad songs give me power to move forward. Sad songs encourage me to search my ultimate happiness.

To me, 聽你聽我 (Hear You, Hear Me) is one of the saddest songs ever, it's written for a dead Taiwan musician 張雨生 in 1997. I thought it would never be performed live, yet in 2009, A-mei sang it for those victims of Typhoon Morakot.

It's a sad occasion, yet it will urge people to treasure lives more.

As the lyric say: 生命的旋律越唱越高. I do hope that I am singing my melody of life louder and louder...... :)

Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2011

I was so excited of this year Serpentine Summer Gallery because it was designed by my favourite architect, Peter Zumthor! However, I am now disappointed after looking at the following video and his statement on the Serpentine Gallery website, as the new Serpentine Summer Pavilion is just like a Chinese courtyard (天井) to me......

It sounds like the design of the pavilion comes from Zumthor's own experience and is very unique, but to me it is not. The 'framing' idea which Zumthor talked about has already been used in the traditional Chinese architecture for thousand of years. The idea of 'Hortus Conclusus' - a contemplative room, a garden within a garden, is also rooted in the Japanese Architecture for hundred of years! To me, all the ideas he described were 'plagiarised' from the Asian Architecture History......

I always like Zumthor's design but this pavilion just showed his ignorance of Asian Architecture... Who say the moon is fuller in the West?

Hopefully, the pavilion itself will change my prejudice once I visit it in August :)

To me, this song used to be the most dangerous song. It threw me into solitude in those lonely nights. However, I do not feel sad anymore after listening this song today. Instead, I knew I have learnt my lessons that I am now strong enough to deal with my 'misfortunes'.

Joys do not last forever, yet, so do griefs and troubles. I now interpret the song differently as:

Damien Hirst in Hong Kong

Damien Hirst is not my favourite artist. His artworks to me is just so-so. Yet, his ability of marketing and branding himself as one of the most important and valuable contemporary artists in UK is extremely admirable.

Therefore, it may still be worth to visit his exhibition, not to see the artworks, but to see how artworks are being overpriced and how people is being misled by celebrity contemporary artists.

By the way, it's very obvious that I am jealous of his success.

「生命是無可避免的，藝術是插花。」（Life is inevitable, Art is flower arranging.）

提起Damien Hirst，大家可能會想起他在2008年雷曼爆破期間，以逾6億港元的紀錄天價拍賣出鑽石骷髏頭作品，或是他的鯊魚標本成名作；而我卻記住了這句說話，一句節錄自他於1997年推出的個人作品專書I want to Spend the Rest of My Life Everywhere, with Everyone, One to One, Always, Forever, Now.中附錄的結語。當年他曾來港跟進專書的組裝印刷，事隔14年，終於首次在Gagosian Gallery舉行首個亞洲藝術展覽。是次Damien Hirst匆匆來港預備展覽，跟《明報》life&style版做獨家訪問。

過了這麼多年，對藝術的定義有不同嗎？曾自認是偽君子，每一天也會有新想法的Damien Hirst這樣回答﹕「藝術從來也是生命和宇宙的一種反映。我只是不斷嘗試回答這些永恆的關於生命的問題。我們在這裏做什麼？我們從哪裏來？又將會去哪裏？背後是不是都有原因呢？」這次展出的其中一個焦點，是他的新頭骨作品For Heaven's Sake，以他收藏的19世紀維多利亞時代的嬰兒頭骨製成。「新作用上粉紅鑽石，比起以往採用白鑽的作品更難找到相同顏色和質素的鑽石。加上頭骨細得多，製作過程更錯綜複雜。」Damien Hirst以嬰兒頭骨製作藝術品的舉動雖被不少人批評為殘忍或不道德，但作為三個兒子的爸爸的他認為，那只是觀點與角度的問題，並不放在心上。

尋找各種可能製造驚喜

Damien Hirst總懂得為藝術製造話題，鯊魚標本、鑽石骷髏頭、不同顏色的圓點圖畫，在他的命名下都被賦予意義。鯊魚標本是The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living，圓點圖畫的名字是各種化合物，另一系列的圓形轉畫則可以叫做beautiful, insane, insensitive, erupting, liquid, ice, vice painting。他沒有評論自己是不是刻意製造話題而成功吸引大家的目光，只道自己是幸運的。「當世界上的其他角落，有那麼多的藝術家賣不出任何作品時，仍然有那麼多人喜歡我的作品到一個程度，願意付出龐大的金錢購買。」至於不少人認為他是企業家多於藝術家，他回應﹕「對我來說，創意與穿越界限、打破既定規條，比起自己是不是一個企業家的身分這一點更為重要。我重視創意多於商業，但無論從事藝術還是商業活動，我都不斷反問自己一個問題——『What if...？』我喜歡尋找各種各樣的可能性，然後做出一些令人驚喜的事。至於金錢，只是製作一件藝術品時所帶來的副產品，而非本身的目的。」

欣賞汪建偉的質疑態度

近年中國當代藝術家的作品在拍賣市場上有很好的成績，Damien Hirst認為，「任何方法表現出對當代藝術的重視，我也覺得是一件好事。尤其是當拍賣會上每每錄得破紀錄的成交數字，我覺得是非常棒的事。說到底，我認為藝術世界應該由藝術家主導」。Damien Hirst亦有相當的藝術收藏品，包括Jeff Koons、Sarah Lucas、Richard Prince的作品，亦有來自北美的海達族印第安人的奇石和圖騰等。「至於中國當代藝術品中，艾未未和蔡國強的作品固然很精彩，但另一些藝術家的作品也吸引到我，最近我便手仔細研究藝術家汪建偉的作品。」汪建偉的作品涉及裝置、錄影、行為、戲劇等，是中國唯一參加過德國卡塞爾文獻展、意大利威尼斯雙年展和巴西聖保羅雙年展三大國際大展的藝術家，並曾獲美國當代藝術基金會年度藝術家獎。汪建偉吸引Damien Hirst的地方，是他對一切也提出質疑的態度。

下個作品探討什麼才是真

雖然有不少評論家認為，Damien Hirst的巔峰期已過，亦盛傳蘇富比認為其作品的二手市場已沒有承托。但貴為現時在世的最富有藝術家，他仍有雄心壯志。「我的下一個作品，名字是Treasures from the Wreck of the Unbelievable。」整個作品，將圍繞Damien Hirst的想像而成，在2000年前沉沒的一艘名為Unbelievable的船隻，船隻原本滿載雕像、珠寶等貴重東西。Damien Hirst正為這艘Unbelievable搭建布景和道具，並打算派出潛水員重新發掘這些「珍寶」，並將整個過程拍攝下來，再根據影像繪製畫作。除了會用上真的珠寶，將被打撈的雕像，亦會仿照藝術史上不少真實的作品而製成，例如現於巴黎羅浮宮展出的Michelangelo的Rebellious Slave。Damien Hirst最想做到的，是令人以為Michelangelo曾經看過這批「沉船」作品，並將之抄襲成自己的雕像，提出「什麼才是真的？」問題。另外，他正與Tate Modern研究合作的可能性。

新作尚未完成，蝴蝶油畫仍是今次展覽的重點。蝴蝶是Damien Hirst的作品中一個反覆出現的主題之一，他曾解釋﹕蝴蝶很美，但遺憾的是牠中間那令人作嘔的毛茸茸的身體。Damien Hirst其實也是那隻蝴蝶，他的作品有嬌艷亦有塵俗的一面，喜歡或討厭只是一線之差，但大師如他早已目空一切。不是一早說了，他就只是在為生命插花嗎？

A mentor for many established artists in Hong Kong, Lui Chun-kwong is calling it a day after 25 years of teaching and 17 years of abstract painting. He meets with Edmund Lee on the big occasion.

When he showed me around the gallery space three days before the opening of his latest exhibition, Lui Chun-kwong was visibly torn between elation and melancholy. The teacher in him – and quite a teacher he’s been, having taught at the Fine Arts Department at the Chinese University of Hong Kong for a quarter century – was understandably overjoyed to see some 70 former students of his come together and celebrate the 54-year-old master’s inadvertently devoted life in education. The artist in him, meanwhile, appeared crestfallen. “She has reduced my painting into thousands of pieces,” Lui smiled bitterly as we passed by Au Hoi-lam, who was setting up her meticulously crafted installation piece on one side of the room. “It looks like the girls are much more ready to cut my artworks to shreds,” he later remarked, looking wistfully at one of the few works that have mercifully kept his paintings intact.

In a sense, it’s all Lui’s fault. Upon retirement as one of the principal teachers at the university earlier this year, Lui was approached by the gallery to put on a teacher-student show. In response, he sent out invitations (a polite way of saying homework assignments) to a wide variety of his students, ranging from the finest of Hong Kong to Lui’s personal favourites, to each create a new work with an existing painting by Lui. “After taking my work, you can do whatever you want with it. You can burn it or dissect it,” he instructed; his students duly obliged.

“It’s both exciting and sad,” Lui now reflects on his contradictory emotions. “They’re still my paintings after all!” Too late. “Some of my students have really made them completely unrecognisable; it’s hard to avoid this mixed feeling. I’ve always had the view that my works, once they’re finished, mean very little to me. The fun of it is in the expression, the creative process. My melancholy is [more] stemmed from the realisation that a painting of mine has… vanished. Will a better work emerge from this process? It can never be guaranteed.”

You could say the same about Lui’s serendipitous start to his teaching career at CUHK, which, over time, has given us many of the best local artists working today. In 1985, the Guangdong-born, Hong Kong-based artist was all set to begin his professional career in New York, but as Lui came back to Hong Kong to deal with some emigration procedures he was approached to head a new vacancy at the faculty. “I was 29 then,” he recalls, “and I thought Dad and Mum would be very happy if I took up the job. Since I got no money, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to teach for two or three years there. I was expecting two or three, and ended up giving it 25. That’s so-called life.”

In that time, Lui has taken a lucid view of the art scene’s changing landscape: from the specialisation in one particular medium in the old days to the mixed-media approach today; from a time of contemplating big ideas to the post-1997 emphasis on local culture and the completely frivolous subject matters that have grown to occupy our current crop of young artists. Through it all, Lui himself has also undergone a change in mentality. “In my first decade or so [at the job], I tried very hard to be a good teacher. I wasn’t able to,” he says. “In the second half [of my teaching career], I gave up being a teacher. I turned myself into my students’ audience – only that I was more sincere and honest than the ordinary ones. I’d follow their work. Whether they’re working on something or encountering difficulties, I went to great length to track their progress, with the mentality of an audience.” As he observes, many of those who’ve gone on to make a name for themselves are the really, really persistent ones. “Art doesn’t give up on you,” the teacher reflects. “Only you can give up on art.”

With the new group exhibition, Lui is also looking to bring the curtain down on an artistic phase – characterised by his signature abstract paintings of scrupulously drawn, arbitrarily coloured vertical lines on large canvases – that he started in late 1993. “Most of my CUHK students in the past two decades have been looking at the same style of mine,” he says. “They’re thinking, ‘Mr Lui never changes.’ They wished very much to see something new from me, but due to the job, I haven’t really had the time to think about my work. I hope to have more freedom to do my work from now on, to concentrate on my own artistic career.”

Three days later, we meet again at the totally packed opening at Osage Kwun Tong. “This is like a big reunion,” says an ecstatic Lui, surveying the crowd like a proud father of hundreds. As the master moves on to his next artistic phase with a bang, the paintings cut open are still in shreds, and generations of Hong Kong artists are once again united by art and booze. Here’s to a new beginning.

"I led you in yesterday, you lead me out today."

Issues of reliance, solicitude, subversion, and treachery underscore the complexity of a productive and meaningful relationship between teacher and student. In different teacher-student relationships, the expectation and conflict between art educators and their students are especially profound. While most will agree that art is about individuality, the insertion of the teacher-student dynamic into the relationship between ‘You’ and ‘I’ complicates it and results in subtle transformations to their artistic trajectories.

Lui Chun Kwong’s artworks serve as the backbone of You Are Here, I Am Not. The exhibition consists of works by more than 100 Hong Kong artists. All the participating artists are graduates of the Fine Arts Department at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, where Lui taught for more than twenty years. Through this fellowship of past teacher-student relations and their collaboration as artists in the present, this exhibition will act as a platform to differentiate from their usual mode of thinking and working, and will also serve to examine the artistic practices of each artist in the exhibition.

Lui Chun Kwong (b. 1956) attended art courses under the Department of Extra-mural Studies at The University of Hong Kong and The Chinese University of Hong Kong before he studied in the Fine Arts Department of the National Taiwan Normal University. He joined the Department of Fine Arts, The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1985 and further gained an MA degree from Goldsmiths College, under the University of London in 1994. He also founded The Hong Kong Modern Art Society of Watercolours with his fellow artists in 1988 and chaired the society for the first three years. Between 1998 and 2002, he served as the Chairman of the Hong Kong Visual Arts Society. His recent exhibitions include Legacy and Creations: Ink Art vs Ink Art at the Shanghai Art Museum (2010) and Beyond the Image: Liang Quan, Lui Chun Kwong, Yan Shan Chun at Osage Kwun Tong, Hong Kong (2009). He is currently an honorary museum advisor to the Hong Kong Leisure and Cultural Services Department.

Ten things the Philippines bus siege police got wrong

A security analyst who has worked in counter-terrorism with the British Army and Scotland Yard, Charles Shoebridge, says the officers involved in Manila's bus siege showed great courage - but they were not properly trained or equipped for the task.

Here are 10 areas where, in his view, they could have done better.

1. Determination
The first officers who tried to storm the bus were driven out by gunshots from the hostage taker, former policeman Rolando Mendoza. "They showed great courage to go on board. It's very crowded, just one aisle down the middle of the bus. But once you get on board it's not unexpected you are going to be fired at. Squads like this have to be made up of very special people, specially trained and selected for their characteristics of courage, determination and aggression. In this case they acted as 99% of the population would have, which was to turn round and get out. They didn't seem to have the necessary determination and aggression to follow the attack through."

2. Lack of equipment
The police spent a long time smashing the windows of the bus, whereas explosive charges (known as frame charges) would have knocked in windows and doors instantly. "They had no ladders to get through the windows. They smashed the windows but didn't know what to do next," Mr Shoebridge says. "They almost looked like a group of vandals." Their firearms were also inappropriate - some had pistols, some had assault rifles. Ideally they would have carried a short submachine gun, suitable for use in confined spaces.

3. Lost opportunity to disarm the gunman
There were numerous opportunities to restrain the gunman, Mr Shoebridge believes. "The negotiators were so close to him, and he had his weapon hanging down by his side. He could have been disabled without having to kill him."

4. Lost opportunity to shoot the gunman
The video of the drama also shows there were occasions when the gunman was standing alone, during the course of the day, and could have been shot by a sharpshooter. "You are dealing with an unpredictable and irrational individual. The rule should be that if in the course of negotiations an opportunity arises to end the situation decisively, it should be taken," Mr Shoebridge says. Either this possibility did not occur to the officers in charge, he adds, or they considered it and decided to carry on talking.

5. Satisfying the gunman's demands
"I wondered why the authorities just didn't give in to all of his demands," says Charles Shoebridge. "A promise extracted under force is not a promise that you are required to honour. Nobody wants to give in to the demands of terrorists, but in a situation like this, which did not involve a terrorist group, or release of prisoners, they could have just accepted his demands. He could be reinstated in the police - and then be immediately put in prison for life for hostage taking." The Philippines authorities did in fact give in to the gunman's demands, but too little, too late. One message promised to review his case, while he wanted it formally dismissed. A second message reinstating him as a police offer only arrived after the shooting had started.

6. Televised proceedings
The gunman was able to follow events on television, revealing to him everything that was going on around him. This was a "crucial defect in the police handling", Mr Shoebridge says. He adds that police should always consider putting a barrier or screen around the area, to shield the scene from the cameras and keep the hostage taker in the dark.

7. No element of surprise
It was clear to the gunman what the police were doing at all times, not only because the whole incident was televised, but also because they moved "laboriously slowly", Mr Shoebridge says. The police did not distract him, so were unable to exploit the "crucial element of surprise".

8. Safeguarding the public
At least one bystander was shot, possibly because the public was allowed too close. The bullet from an M16 rifle, as carried by the gunman, can travel for about a mile, so preventing any risk of injury would have been difficult, Mr Shoebridge says, but a lot more could have been done. "When you saw the camera view from above, it was clear there was little command and control of the public on the ground," he says.

9. Using the gunman's brother to negotiate
Relatives and close friends can be a double-edged sword, Mr Shoebridge says. While they may have leverage over the hostage taker, what they are saying cannot be easily controlled. In this case, the gunman's brother was included in the negotiations - however, at a certain stage he became agitated and police started to remove him from the scene. The gunman saw this on television, and became agitated himself. According to one report he fired a warning shot.

10. Insufficient training
In some parts of the Philippines, such as Mindanao, hostage taking is not an uncommon occurrence, so the country has some forces that are well trained in the necessary tactics. The detachment involved in Monday's incident clearly was not, says Mr Shoebridge. After smashing the windows, one of the officers eventually put some CS gas inside, though "to what effect was not clear" he says. A unit involved in this work, needs to be "trained again and again, repeatedly practising precisely this kind of scenario," he says.

忌廉芝士 70克
Cream Cheese 70g
布包豆腐花 / 百福嫩豆腐 180克
Soft Tofu 180g
糖 25克
Sugar 25g
魚膠粉 7克
Gelatin 7g
淡忌廉 120克
Whipping Cream 120g
椰果肉 30g
Nata de Coco 30g
蛋糕片 1片
One 6” Cake Base

做法
Preparation method
1.
豆腐先用熱水拖一拖, 並且秘去部份水份
Put Tofu into hot water for a while, then take it out and dry a bit.
2.
打軟忌廉芝士, 加入糖打至軟身
Whip cream cheese, then add sugar and continue whipping till soft.
3.
加豆腐入芝士中, 打勻.
Mix tofu into the mixture.
4.
打起淡忌廉
Whip the whipping cream in a separate container
5.
魚膠粉水溶後加入芝士, 並加入(4), 攪勻
Dissolve Gelatin in water, stir it into the mixture with the whipped cream.
6.
加入椰果肉至(5)中, 攪勻
Finally stir the Nata de Coco into the mixture
7.
蛋糕片放在模中, 再倒入(6), 雪櫃雪兩小時
Place the cake base into a cake mould, and then pour the mixture into the mould. Refrigerate for 2 hours.

註: 豆腐花可以買糖水店未落糖的那些, 做出來的餅比較滑, 但豆腐味不太重.
用豆腐的話, 做出來的沒有那麼滑, 但豆腐味較濃.

Well, it's not really a Church. It's a window installation called 'Rainbow Church'. It consists of a 9-metre window made of 500 crystal prisms, which create rainbows within the space as the light is refracted.

I did think about using glass bricks refracting sunlight into buildings, yet using glass prisms is much simple and elegant! Why didn't I get this idea before him!!! lol

打從一九九六年起，海下灣被列為環境保護區成為海岸公園後，有很多村民都期待政府將海下灣發展成旅遊區。因此有村民取得丁權後，等待政府收購而從中賺取暴利。

可是十多年來，政府並無實質性的計劃去發展海下。村民的搖錢夢亦隨之粉碎。

現在有發展商收購土地，失去了橙的村民能「執返個桔」，都算是無中生利，賺了一畢。

其實，海下灣的環境早已在列為環境保護區前被破壞。根據我父親的童年回憶，海下灣沙灘的沙是珊瑚沙，千年來天然累積、很雪白很幼細的珊瑚沙。後來有建造商要海沙建造房屋，就在海下灣大批大批的把沙都挖走了。海下灣沙灘上的沙退回大海，留下巨石和黃黃的石沙。

丁屋地本來就是要來建屋。要不是貪婪的村民等待政府的收購，那95幅丁屋地早已建造了95幢丁屋，自然環境亦早已被破壞。

作為一個建築系的學生，又是海下村的原居民，我認為土地是要發展的。不論是住宅或是旅遊設施，任何的建築發展都會影響附近的自然環境。難倒因保護環境，村民就不能建屋，只能以天作被以地作床？要保護環境，就要依靠有良心的發展商，雇用有良心有經驗的建築師、工程師等去設計一個可持續發展的建築計劃。

可是，有良心的發展商在香港存在嗎？

海下95幅地一次過易手
脗合司馬文「舉報」發展藍圖

【明報專訊】有「香港後花園」之稱西貢海下灣是市民浮潛和觀賞珊瑚的熱點，但這片世外桃源正面臨發展商大興土木的威脅。「創建香港」召集人司馬文前日揭發一間名為協寶發展有限公司，於今年1月中以1186萬元購入海下灣大片土地，擬建40多幢低密度獨立屋。本報昨翻查地政總署和稅務局的相關土地交易紀錄，證實協寶購入的海下灣地塊多達95幅，與司馬文獲取的發展計劃圖中擬建住宅的地理位置合（見圖）。

村民指有村民收錢做顧問

本報記者昨走訪海下村，亦從不願披露姓名的村民口中印證確有發展計劃，部分村民參與其中，希望將海下建成豪宅區。有村民批評政府不願出價收地，他們唯有把土地賣給發展商。地政總署發言人則回覆稱，大埔地政處尚未收到海下相關用地有建屋申請。

協寶發展有限公司今年1月14日以1186萬元向「祥運發展有限公司」購入海下灣大片土地，全屬新界283地段，共涉及95個地塊，平均每幅地售價為12.5萬元，位置與網上流傳的住宅發展計劃圖合。協寶唯一的董事是張俊華（譯音），他同時持有另外4間公司，這5間公司全部於去年才成立。本報記者昨曾到訪協寶的登記地址，惟上址卻是人力顧問公司，周末無人應門。

記者昨往海下灣觀察，現場所見，計劃發展的地方圍繞海下村，是一片綠油油的山坡，現時尚未被圍起，故一般遊人未必會知此處日後或有發展計劃。沿擬發展的地方走，除見大量林木，還會經過一個石灰，此石灰屬政府文物，原屬村民所有，但後來捐給政府，供行山客欣賞，暫未知文物會否受計劃影響。至於擬發展成運動設施的地方，現為一片紅樹林，故若發展計劃落實，這片紅樹林或有可能要剷去。

記者向海下村村民詢問有關發展計劃，大都三緘其口，只有部分租戶表明強烈反對，但指未有人計劃收購海下村的房屋。女村長更稱對計劃毫不知情，亦不願接受訪問。

怨政府不肯出錢買地

不過，一名不願上鏡的村民向記者表示，對計劃早已聽聞，並稱當中有村民參與，收錢擔任計劃顧問，但村民亦有游說發展商興建較低密度的住宅，避免過分發展。他批評政府未有為環保出力，又指發展商收地價錢其實頗低，估計政府如出價購地，價錢會高一半，「若政府肯買地，就不用興建住宅，可隨意用來作環保用途」，政府不應在有發展商買地後才干預。

司馬文表示，在西貢郊野公園附近，共有20幅未發展、又沒有「分區計劃大綱圖」的私人土地，它們亦有可能像大浪西、海下灣被人買起發展。公共專業聯盟主席黎廣德認為，既然政府願花5000多萬元買下文化遺產甘棠第，為什麼不買屬自然遺產的大浪西灣？黎說，數年前曾粗略估算，現時有生態或景觀價值的土地約佔全港土地1％至2％，以農地價格計算，政府要購回所有土地約需500億元，「少過建高鐵」。

他表示，政府購回這些土地後，可持續發展，除有環境管理，亦可向一些打算繼續居住的居民提供支援，讓他們辦「B&B」民宿、士多。他又指政府應檢討包括丁屋等政策，因這讓許多不打算繼續居住的人轉賣建丁屋權利，成了發展商入侵鄉郊建屋的捷徑。

My favourite scene from ‘The Hours’.

The first time I watched ‘The Hours’, I did not understand it. I loved the movie, but I had no idea what it was telling. It’s about people struggling with no hope, with depression, yet at that time I was too young to understand.

Now I understand the movie. It’s not just about mental health problems, it’s about life. It’s about how people are living and struggling with day-to-day problems.

Everybody has problem, but no one knows your own problem better than you do. People around you who love you will try all their best to help you, but it is you that need to help yourself. No one can help you except your own self.

It is a painful process for people who care about you just to watch at the side. However, in order to walk, a baby needs to learn how to stand up after a fall. Otherwise, the baby never know how to walk.

I wrestle alone, yet I know the victory will be mine.

我們的童年

今天的孩子，上課、補習、學琴，忙得不可開交。五六十年代，孩童過剩，窮家孩子，天生天養。一家八口十口，等閒視之。那年頭，學校匱乏，街童超多。在孩子的生活字典裡，找不到「名牌」。當然，也沒有「麥」記。

After WWII, most families in Hong Kong were poor. Families could not support the children to go to school. Most children had to help taking care of their families, or even go working, earning money to support their families.

原始玩具。五六十年代的街童，玩的是最原始的玩具。一塊好看的石頭，沙堆裡的貝殼，路邊的汽水蓋（那時叫「荷蘭水蓋」），都可消磨半天。

To celebrate growing older, I once wrote the 45 lessons life taught me.

It is the most-requested column I've ever written. My odometer rolls over to 50 this week, so here's an update:

Life isn't fair, but it's still good.
When in doubt, just take the next small step.
Life is too short to waste time hating anyone.
Don't take yourself so seriously. No one else does.
Pay off your credit cards every month.
You don't have to win every argument. Agree to disagree.
Cry with someone. It's more healing than crying alone.
It's OK to get angry with God. He can take it.
Save for retirement starting with your first paycheck.
When it comes to chocolate, resistance is futile.
Make peace with your past so it won't screw up the present.
It's OK to let your children see you cry.
Don't compare your life to others'. You have no idea what their journey is all about.
If a relationship has to be a secret, you shouldn't be in it.
Everything can change in the blink of an eye. But don't worry; God never blinks.
Life is too short for long pity parties. Get busy living, or get busy dying.
You can get through anything if you stay put in today.
A writer writes. If you want to be a writer, write.
It's never too late to have a happy childhood. But the second one is up to you and no one else.
When it comes to going after what you love in life, don't take no for an answer.
Burn the candles, use the nice sheets, wear the fancy lingerie. Don't save it for a special occasion. Today is special.
Overprepare, then go with the flow.
Be eccentric now. Don't wait for old age to wear purple.
The most important sex organ is the brain.
No one is in charge of your happiness except you.
Frame every so-called disaster with these words: "In five years, will this matter?"
Always choose life.
Forgive everyone everything.
What other people think of you is none of your business.
Time heals almost everything. Give time time.
However good or bad a situation is, it will change.
Your job won't take care of you when you are sick. Your friends will. Stay in touch.
Believe in miracles.
God loves you because of who God is, not because of anything you did or didn't do.
Whatever doesn't kill you really does make you stronger.
Growing old beats the alternative - dying young.
Your children get only one childhood. Make it memorable.
Read the Psalms. They cover every human emotion.
Get outside every day. Miracles are waiting everywhere.
If we all threw our problems in a pile and saw everyone else's, we'd grab ours back.
Don't audit life. Show up and make the most of it now.
Get rid of anything that isn't useful, beautiful or joyful.
All that truly matters in the end is that you loved.
Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need.
The best is yet to come.
No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up.
Take a deep breath. It calms the mind.
If you don't ask, you don't get.
Yield.
Life isn't tied with a bow, but it's still a gift.

Haven't watched this movie earlier because of its torture scenes.

I finally watched it, and to me, it's really really scary, yet it's a good movie. I can really feel those pains, both physical and psychological, just by watching those scenes. The actors and actresses are all amazing. They paid lots of efforts into the movie in order to made it so convincing.

Though I know it's only a fiction/movie, I can't help thinking that some people during the wars did have similar experience and this thought terrifies me a lot.

This movie makes me realise that I am a weak person, weaker than I expected.

Marina Abramović is at MoMA!!!!

From March 14 - May 31, she is going to 'install' herself on a wooden chair for seven hours a day, six days a week, with no breaks for food, water and the bathroom. Not only showing photos and videos, some of her earlier works would be re-performed live by other people in the exhibition!!!

I could be one of those people, as I had experience re-performing one of her work Rhythm 0 (1974)! lol

To prepare the Re-Performers for the retrospective at MoMA, last Fall Marina Abramović invited them to a workshop at her home in upstate New York called "cleaning the house." Participants slept outside and did not eat nor speak for four days. They engaged in a regimen of individual and group exercises, such as walking backwards in slow motion, counting grains of rice, and observing a single object for hours. The goal of these exercises was to enable them to become aware of their limits and to find their own charismatic space.

【明報專訊】我們常說年輕人不快樂，香港最新的工資數據告訴了我們部分原因。

15至19歲以及20至24歲的年輕人，在2008年的收入中位數較10年前同一年齡組別的人分別下跌12.7%及8.5%，但同一時間，所有其他年齡組別的收入中位數都上升。過去10年，年輕人成為職場中的輸家。香港近年大力投資教育，年輕人的學歷表面上有所提升，但數據卻顯示，香港人力培訓政策存在重大缺陷，既無法改善年輕人的競爭力，經濟產業結構也無法為年輕人找到出路，若香港未能對症下藥，這群年輕人將變成「失落的一代」。

港人工資普遍上升
年輕人卻成輸家

根據統計處最新數據，港人收入中位數（以2008年固定價格計算），2008年比1997年上升9.4%。但若按不同年齡組別劃分，不單不同年齡的升幅有極大差別，部分組別更不升反降，15至19歲以及20至24歲這兩個組別，08年收入中位數分別為5500元及7500元，較97年分別減少12.7%及8.5%，所有年齡組別中只有這兩組下跌，其他的都有不同程度的上升，其中45至49歲的組別上升幅度最高，達25%。

由此可見，過去10年香港經濟經歷高低起跌後，港人工資普遍上升，但並非所有人都是贏家。年輕人的工資下跌，不一定因為他們都是不濟的一群，但卻清楚反映他們過去10年成為人力資源市場鬥爭中的輸家。近來港人常說上世紀90年代後出生的年輕人是失落的一代，對社會充滿怨氣，這些數據即使未能完全解釋他們心中的鬱悶，但有助社會了解為何年輕人面對的並非機會處處，而是前路茫茫。

年輕人工資不升反跌，反映香港教育及產業兩項政策的失效。

過去10年，政府大力投資人才培訓，銳意發展專上教育，大力倡辦副學士、展翅計劃等，務求提高港人入讀大專的比率，提升港人競爭力。10年下來，香港年輕人的學歷水平已有一定提升，根據政府統計處2006年的中期人口統計，2006年15至24歲的年輕人達專上教育水平（包括學位、副學位、文憑及證書課程）的有30.6%，比1996年的18.5%大幅上升。既然擁有「大專學歷」的年輕人比率有所增加，競爭力按理應有所提升，但現實數據告訴我們，情並非如此。

年輕人收入下跌，可見針對年輕人的教育及人力資源培訓政策失效，未能切合社會需要。教育的質與量同樣重要，若年輕人學歷表面是提升了，但所學之事無助他們就業，無助適應現今社會的挑戰，再多的副學位不單無補於事，更會令社會出現一批「高不成低不就」的人。

教育須質量並重
增大專學位不代表競爭力提升

社會既然賦予這些年輕人「大專畢業」的地位，他們自然不甘於從事低下階層工作，渴望爬上社會階梯向上流動。當社會賦予他們希望，但在現實世界他們卻處處碰壁，即使大專畢業，也只能當售貨員、文員等過去只需中學畢業學歷且前途有限的職業，當中積累的怨懟與不滿自然無處宣泄。

此外，所有其他年齡層收入皆上升，唯獨年輕人收入下跌，足見香港的經濟產業定必出現結構性的問題。

過去有分析指出，香港產業過於單一，由地產到金融萬變離不開一個「炒」字，近年亦只有旅遊及相關行業有所發展，其他一概欠奉。香港既無工業，高科技研發與創意產業則仍在襁褓階段，如此單一的產業結構是否窒礙了年輕人的發展，政府必須細心研究。此外，也有分析指香港經濟處處被大商家壟斷，租金高昂，不利創業，新加入職場的只能在既得利益者所築構的階梯底層慢慢等待，這些是否年輕人無法向上爬的因素，港府必定要細心研究，找出箇中因由。

「失落的一代」所引致的社會問題，不止年輕人受到影響。年輕人即使學歷較以前高，也無法在社會中向上晉升，勢將被迫與其他更低學歷的中年人「爭飯碗」，若港府未能及時對症下藥，改善教育質素提升年輕人的競爭力，為香港經濟注入更多活力，為年輕人提供更多出路，年輕人的失落將會引致更大的社會矛盾。

【明報專訊】年輕人是社會的未來棟樑，香港未來，有賴現時20至30歲、生於70年代中期至80年代的第四代港人接棒。這一代雖成長於最繁榮的年代，如今卻要面對經濟轉型的未知，怨氣逐漸積聚。本報《新生代系列》透過數據和個案訪問，立體剖析這一代的困局和訴求。今天報道的是年輕一代收入下跌的問題。

隨經濟發展，1997至2008年間市民收入中位數上升9.4％，唯獨15至24歲的年輕人、即所謂「八十後」，入息中位數不升反跌，20至24歲一族的入息中位數，由97年的8200元跌近一成至7500元；至於更年輕的20歲以下跌幅更大。有學者分析，年輕人學歷普遍提升，但收入卻減少，反映教育政策及經濟發展錯配，若政府不作出應對，年輕人怨氣必會累積，成為計時炸彈。

政府統計處資料顯示，以2008年固定價格計算，香港整體僱員收入中位數，由1997年的9600元上升至08年的10500元，增加9.4％，顯示隨經濟整體發展，港人收入普遍上升。不過，若以年齡組別分類，在10個年齡組別中，15至19歲及20至24歲這兩組年輕人的收入中位數卻不升反跌。

在1997年，15至19歲及20至24歲這兩個組別的收入中位數分別為6300元及8200元，但在2008年，這兩組別的收入中位數分別下跌至5500及7500元，跌幅分別達12.7％及8.5％，15至19歲這類最年輕就業人士的薪酬抗跌力最低。

其他年齡組別方面，45至49歲的就業人士收入中位數升幅最大，達25％，由9600元上升至1.2萬元。2008年，35至39歲及40至44歲這兩組的收入中位數最高，達1.3萬元。

學者﹕對政府社會怨氣增

不過，2006年中期人口報告顯示，1996年約有18.5％年輕人具專上教育程度，2006年已增至30.6％，約有27萬人，當中有28％是副學士。

中文大學政治與行政學系高級導師蔡子強指出，年輕人學歷提高，增加他們對社會及個人權利的認知；但同一時間，部分年輕人面對失業及收入下跌問題，往往增加他們對政府及社會的怨氣。

香港大學社會工作及社會行政學系講座教授周永新表示，前行政長官董建華在任期間，銳意10年內讓60％青年接受專上教育，開辦大量副學士課程，青年人學歷提升，但副學士的認受至今仍有爭議。他指出，年輕人學歷提升，但收入卻下跌，反映教育政策與經濟發展出現錯配，加上近年經濟不景，年輕人更難找到工作，具較高學歷的青年不單要面對現實尋找低薪工作，甚至要面對失業，這從年輕人失業率高達20％以上便可見一斑。

「倘不解決將成計時炸彈」

周永新及蔡子強均表示，政府要全面檢討現行的教育、經濟、房屋等政策，研究如何紓解年輕人面對的問題。蔡子強表示，在日前的元旦大遊行，不少青年提出置業困難及其他訴求，若問題未能解決，日後不難成為政府的計時炸彈。

Inspired by course-mate Av, I also started to grow a moustache (Mo) for Movemebr - an annual, month-long celebration of the moustache, highlighting men’s health issues, specifically prostate cancer.

I would grow a moustache for a month from 25th Nov to 24th Dec, 2009. As my ‘facial hair hormone’ is not very strong, I do not have much hair on my face. It would be interesting not only to see how my thin moustache is going to be like after a month, but also how my moustache is not wasted and raises money for the fight against prostate cancer and depression in men.

Swine Flu in UK

Two people in Scotland have been confirmed to be the UK's first swine flu cases. The good news is both of them are recovering. Because of my experience of SARS in HK in 2003, I do feel a bit more nervous. Fingers cross that there is no new case, and even there is/are, the patient(s) would recover!
